Women’s Issues

Some mental health issues are unique to women.  For example, the journey to and through motherhood can uncover our deepest insecurities and bring feelings of pain as well as joy.  Many women struggle through an arduous process of infertility before being able to conceive, experience pregnancy loss along the way, or struggle with the challenges of adoption.  Others who are unable to have children or are not interested in doing so cope with what this means to their identity as a woman.

After beginning motherhood, many women experience post-partum depression, or cope with feelings of isolation that stay-at-home mothering can bring.  This can be confusing and make you feel guilty when you have worked so hard to bring your little bundle of joy into the world in the first place!  Many working moms struggle with guilt in trying to achieve work/life balance or, in the words of Julie de Azevedo Hanks, experience “aspirational shame”, for wanting to have it all.

Other challenges many women face include being on the receiving end of domestic violence, sexual assault, or emotional abuse.   Society has exacting standards for physical beauty and many women struggle with their body image or eating disorders.  An imbalance of power at church, at work, or in the home can make it difficult for some women to find their own voice.
