Multiculturalism & Diversity
It is a fair reaction for you to wonder what a white woman like me is doing presenting myself as a good resource on multiculturalism and diversity. While many people prefer therapists of the same sex, race, religion, and background as themselves, it is not always possible to match up all these demographics, especially when you live in a rural area.
I went to graduate school at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, an area of the country which has a very diverse population. I studied with professors and colleagues from dozens of different countries. I worked with clients from many different religious, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
Rather than becoming an expert in many different cultures, I became aware of differences both between and within groups. I became aware of my own privilege and biases and how they affect the way I view the world. I know enough to know what I don’t know. I know what questions to ask to make sure that culturally relevant information is brought into the therapy session. I know that your culture and background may have contributed to some of your problems, and it may also offer strengths to be part of your solution.
