Crisis Counseling

By nature of the definition, most people don’t plan for a crisis to happen to them, it just happens, and you are left to pick up the pieces.  Whether a community disaster like a school shooting or a hurricane, or a personal disaster like rape or a car accident, counseling immediately after a crisis can be helpful to feel stable.

I lived in Parkland, FL in 2018 when the Parkland shooting occured blocks from my home.  Because I was personally connected to some of the victims and their families, I was able to provide voluntary services right away.  Less than 24 hours after the shooting, I was giving a psycho-educational presentation on what to expect in the immediate aftermath of the crisis to students who were at the school and their parents.

The first hours, days, and weeks after a traumatic event are distinct from the long recovery process that happens later.  Individuals are often in shock right after something terrible happens and may not be up to normal problem-solving capacity.  Flashback and upsetting recollections can be debilitating.  People may need help to ensure short-term physical and emotional safety.
